Share your experienceThe Palace of Holyroodhouse charges 22.00 pounds for an adult booking in advance and 26.00 pounds on the day. Young people aged 18 to 24 pay 14.00 in advance and 17.00 on the day, children aged 5 to 17 pay 11.00 and 13.00, disabled visitors pay the same rates as children, an access companion goes free and under 5s are free. The palace is the King's official residence in Scotland, at the bottom of the Royal Mile with Arthur's Seat rising behind it. The part most people come for is the historic apartments: Mary Queen of Scots' chambers, including the small room where her secretary David Rizzio was murdered in 1566 in front of her while she was six months pregnant. The ruined abbey in the grounds is the quieter surprise and is included in the ticket.
What was great
Mary Queen of Scots' apartments are the real thing rather than a reconstruction, and the Rizzio murder room lands harder in person than any retelling. The ruined abbey is included and is often empty. Booking ahead saves 4 pounds a head, and an access companion goes free.
What nearly ruined the trip
Turning up without booking costs 4 pounds more per adult for exactly the same visit. The route is fixed and one-way, so you cannot linger where you want to. The palace closes to visitors entirely during royal visits, which is not always obvious when planning.
