Thirty Pounds for Six Oysters, Two Minutes From the Royal Mile
Review of Ondine
Been to Edinburgh? This page needs you more than it needs us.
A first-hand review outranks desk research every time, and yours will sit above this one.
Share your experienceOndine charges 30 pounds for six Cumbrae oysters with firecracker dressing and 35 pounds for crispy oysters with buffalo hot sauce, which tells you most of what you need to know about both the kitchen and the bill. It is a seafood restaurant on the first floor of a building on George IV Bridge, a two-minute walk from the Royal Mile, and it has been the serious fish option in Edinburgh for well over a decade. Scottish shellfish is the point: langoustines, oysters, crab, and whatever the day boats landed. Sit at the horseshoe crustacean bar rather than at a table. It is the same menu, the view is of the kitchen, and you can order two dishes without feeling you have under-committed.
What was great
Scottish shellfish handled by people who know what to do with it. A crustacean bar you can eat at properly rather than perch at. Close enough to the Royal Mile to be convenient and one floor up, so it is quiet.
What nearly ruined the trip
Expensive, and shellfish prices climb quickly once you start adding. Being on the first floor makes it easy to walk past. It fills with the festival crowd in August, when booking becomes essential rather than advisable.
