Edinburgh visitor levy 2026: 5 percent, first five nights, first in the UK

Edinburgh became the first UK city to charge a visitor levy on 24 July 2026: 5 percent on paid overnight accommodation for the first five consecutive nights. It applies to bookings made on or after 1 October 2025.
Edinburgh is the first UK city to put a visitor levy on the hotel bill. From 24 July 2026 it is 5 percent of paid overnight accommodation, charged on the first five consecutive nights of a stay, and projected to raise up to 50 million pounds a year. Bookings made before 1 October 2025 are exempt even if the trip itself is later. Bookings made on or after that date are not.
How the 5 percent actually works
It is a percentage of the room, not a flat per-person fee. A 200 pound night is 10 pounds of levy. Five nights is the cap: night six and after in the same stay do not add more levy. A one-night stay pays 5 percent once. A Fringe-week booking at 300 pounds a night for five nights is 75 pounds of levy on top of an already doubled or tripled room rate.
August is the real multiplier
The Edinburgh Festival Fringe runs 7 to 31 August 2026. Festival-month hostels run about 45 to 80 pounds for a dorm against 20 to 35 pounds in a normal month. Budget hotels 150 to 300 pounds against 55 to 140. Mid-range 250 to 500 against 140 to 280. The levy sits on top of that, it does not replace it. January to March and November are the 20 to 40 percent cheaper window.
Other 2026 line items
UK ETA for non-British/Irish visitors without UK immigration status is required from 25 February 2026. The fee rose from 16 to 20 pounds on 8 April 2026, valid up to two years, no child discount. Lothian Buses adult singles rose to 2.20 pounds on 22 February 2026. Edinburgh Trams airport-to-city is 7.90 pounds one way, frozen for 2026. Edinburgh Castle is about 21.50 to 23.50 pounds online, cheaper than the gate, on 30-minute timed slots.
The Royal Mile is one of the most complained-about tourist traps in the UK. Police Scotland logged 47 tourist-related thefts in 2025, down from 62 in 2024. Violent crime against visitors is rare. The levy is the new line item; the Fringe calendar is still the one that can actually ruin the budget.
