Travel buddies in Thailand
Thailand is where a lot of people take their first big solo trip, and where a lot of them discover that the best days were the ones spent with somebody they met on the way.

How people pair up in Thailand
The well worn route runs Bangkok, north to Chiang Mai and Pai, then south to the islands. Because so many people follow some version of it, the chance that somebody is a few days ahead or behind you is high. Travel buddies here usually share a leg rather than a whole trip: a longtail boat charter to a quieter beach, a scooter day in the mountains, a cooking class, a night train.
When people go
November to February is the cool, dry season for most of the country and the busiest time for travelers. Songkran, the Thai New Year water festival, runs 13 to 15 April and is much more fun in a group. In Chiang Mai, the lantern festivals in November draw people from all over the world. The Andaman coast around Phuket gets its heavy rain from roughly May to October.
Where travelers meet
Hostel common rooms, night markets, Muay Thai nights and island boat trips. For a first meetup with somebody from here, a night market or a busy cafe is ideal: public, easy to leave, and a natural reason to be there.
Getting a good match
- Post the leg you want company for: "Chiang Mai to Pai on the 12th" gets better matches than "Thailand, a month".
- Boat charters and private drivers get much cheaper split two or four ways.
- Songkran and the November lantern festivals fill up. If you are going for one, say so.
