Travel buddies in Vietnam

Almost everyone travels Vietnam in a straight line, north to south or south to north, which makes it one of the easiest countries to find people on the same route.

How people pair up in Vietnam

The route runs between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, with stops like Ha Long Bay, Ninh Binh, Hue, Hoi An and Da Lat. People team up for sleeper buses and trains, Ha Long Bay boat trips, and the Ha Giang loop in the far north, which many travelers ride with a local driver as part of a group. In Hoi An, people share bikes out to the beach and tailor visits.

When people go

The weather varies a lot from north to south, so there is usually a good region at any time. The central coast around Hoi An and Hue gets heavy rain in autumn and can flood around October and November. Tết, the Lunar New Year in late January or February, is a big celebration but many businesses close for several days.

Where travelers meet

Hostels on the main route are very social, and so are street food spots and night markets. In Hoi An, the old town on a lantern evening is an easy public place to meet.

Getting a good match

  • Post your direction and your rough dates in each stop. Same route travelers find you that way.
  • Doing the Ha Giang loop? Say when you plan to start.
  • Check if your dates overlap Tết, because many places close.
