How people pair up in Peru

Cusco is the hub. From there, people head to Machu Picchu by the Inca Trail, the Salkantay trek or the train, and do day trips to the Sacred Valley and Rainbow Mountain. Inca Trail permits are limited and sell out months ahead, so people who want to go together need to plan early. Lima is the food capital, and a food tour or a ceviche lunch is a great first meetup.

When people go

The dry season in the Andes, roughly May to September, is the most popular time for trekking. The Inca Trail closes every February for maintenance. Cusco sits at about 3,400 meters, so most people spend a couple of easy days there before hiking, which is a good time to meet the people they will trek with.

Where travelers meet

The Plaza de Armas in Cusco, hostels, and the tour agencies around the square. In Lima, Miraflores and Barranco are easy, public places to meet.

Getting a good match

  • Doing the Inca Trail? Post early. Permits are limited and sell out.
  • Say which trek you want: Inca Trail, Salkantay or Lares.
  • Plan a couple of rest days in Cusco for the altitude. They are good days to meet your group.
