Practical tips
Editorial- Avoid visiting between February and April if you can. Chiang Mai's AQI topped 150 ('unhealthy') in March 2026 and PM2.5 hit 188 micrograms per cubic meter on March 30, 2026, more than 12 times the WHO's 24 hour guideline.
- If you do travel during burning season, pack N95 masks for outdoor time and ask your accommodation whether the room has an air purifier before you book.
- For elephant encounters, book operators that explicitly rule out riding, on demand bathing, and tricks. Genuine no ride half days run 1,800 to 2,500 baht and full days up to 3,000 to 4,500 baht, while some camps still bolt a 'sanctuary' label onto a 2,000 to 3,000 baht add on while continuing to offer riding.
- Dress modestly for Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, shoulders and knees covered, shoes off before entering buildings. Admission is about 50 baht for foreign visitors and it is open 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.
- If you are applying for the Destination Thailand Visa, apply entirely online at thaievisa.go.th and have at least 500,000 baht, about $16,000, in your account, since 2026 applications increasingly require proof the balance has been held for three months.
- Check your passport's visa exemption status before booking. Thailand's cabinet approved rolling back the 60 day visa free entry to 30 days for most of the 93 previously eligible nationalities in 2026, taking effect 15 days after Royal Gazette publication.
