Share your experienceThe Rijksmuseum charges 25 euros for adults, with free admission for visitors up to 18 years old. For a national collection of this size that is reasonable, and the under-18 policy makes a family visit dramatically cheaper than the equivalent in Paris or London. The building reopened in 2013 after a decade-long renovation and it shows: the layout is clear, the lighting is good, and the Gallery of Honour funnels you toward the Dutch Golden Age painting that most people come for. That funnel is also the problem. The crowd concentrates hard around a handful of Rembrandts and Vermeers, while rooms of equally good seventeenth-century work sit half empty a few metres away.
What was great
The collection is the definitive account of Dutch art and it is presented in a building that was rebuilt specifically to show it well. Free admission for everyone up to 18 is genuinely generous. Four Van Gogh paintings including a famous self-portrait are here, which surprises people who assume they are all at the Van Gogh Museum.
What nearly ruined the trip
The Gallery of Honour and the room around The Night Watch are congested for most of the day, and that is where nearly everyone spends their time. Twenty-five euros is real money if you are also doing the Van Gogh Museum and Anne Frank House in the same trip, which most visitors are.
