Fifty-Five Euros for Lunch Grown in the Greenhouse You Are Sitting In
Review of De Kas
Been to Amsterdam? This page needs you more than it needs us.
A first-hand review outranks desk research every time, and yours will sit above this one.
Share your experienceDe Kas serves a three-course lunch at 55 euros, four courses at 67 and five at 76. There is no a la carte: you eat what was picked that morning. The restaurant occupies a 1926 municipal nursery greenhouse in Frankendael park, with eight metres of glass overhead and the kitchen garden immediately outside. Most of the vegetables and herbs come from that garden or the restaurant's own land at Beemster, which is why the menu is written the same day rather than printed. It is a twenty-minute tram ride east of the centre, which keeps it almost entirely free of the crowds that make eating in central Amsterdam a chore.
What was great
A working greenhouse as a dining room, with the produce growing outside the glass. A menu genuinely dictated by the harvest. Far enough east that you are eating with locals rather than in a tourist queue.
What nearly ruined the trip
No a la carte and no menu published in advance, so dietary requirements need warning. Fifty-five euros before wine for lunch is a commitment. The greenhouse is hot on a summer afternoon, which is what greenhouses do.
