Official Review

Written by RuinMyTrip Editorial from published research and official sources, not from a personal trip. It is not a traveler review and is never counted in the community rating. How we research.

What it is

A set-menu restaurant in a restored 1926 nursery greenhouse in Frankendael park, east Amsterdam, cooking almost entirely from its own kitchen garden and farm.

Why travelers eat here

Because the distance between the garden and the plate is about thirty metres, and because eating under eight metres of glass in a park is a genuinely different evening from eating in the centre.

What is genuinely good

The greenhouse itself, produce picked that morning, a kitchen garden you can walk through, and a location that keeps the tourist crush out.

Downsides

Set menu only. No advance menu. Hot in high summer. A tram ride from the centre.

Best for

Anyone who cares about vegetables, and anyone wanting one good dinner away from the canal-belt crowds.

Consider eating elsewhere if

You want to choose your own dishes, or you are in Amsterdam for two nights and want to stay central.

Practical advice

Tell them about dietary requirements when booking, not on arrival, because the menu is fixed. Ask for a table in the greenhouse rather than the annexe. Walk through the kitchen garden before you sit down.

Prices and reservations

Lunch 55 euros for three courses, 67 for four, 76 for five. Dinner is a five-course set menu. Reservations online and effectively required.

Getting there

Tram 19 to Hogeweg, then five minutes on foot into Frankendael park. About twenty minutes from Centraal.

Where it sits

Park Frankendael in Amsterdam-Oost, a residential district east of the centre with a country house, allotments and almost no tourists.

How long to allow

Two and a half hours.

The RuinMyTrip verdict

Worth the tram ride and the fifty-five euros. Book the greenhouse, warn them about diets in advance, and walk the garden first.

Fifty-Five Euros for Lunch Grown in the Greenhouse You Are Sitting In

De Kas serves a three-course lunch at 55 euros, four courses at 67 and five at 76. There is no a la carte: you eat what was picked that morning. The restaurant occupies a 1926 municipal nursery greenhouse in Frankendael park, with eight metres of glass overhead and the kitchen garden immediately outside. Most of the vegetables and herbs come from that garden or the restaurant's own land at Beemster, which is why the…
