Share your experienceThe Stedelijk charges 22,50 euros for adults and 12,50 for students and CJP holders, with free entry for visitors under 19. It opens 10am to 6pm daily, with no entry after 5.45pm. It is the third museum on the Museumplein and the one most visitors drop when their schedule tightens. That is exactly why it is worth keeping: the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum are both excellent and both crowded, while the Stedelijk holds modern and contemporary art in rooms where you can stand still. The building is two halves, a nineteenth-century original and a white extension universally known as the bathtub. Opinions on it are strong in both directions, which is more than most museum architecture manages.
What was great
Modern and contemporary art of real quality with room to actually look at it, which neither of its neighbours can offer. Slightly cheaper than the Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum, free for under-19s, and half price for students. Same square, so it costs nothing in travel time.
What nearly ruined the trip
It is the least essential of the three Museumplein museums if you only have time for one, and it knows it. The 5.45pm cut-off catches late arrivals who assume a 6pm close means 6pm entry. The extension divides opinion sharply enough that some visitors dislike the building itself.
