What it is
The Dutch national museum, in a purpose-built 1885 Cuypers building on the Museumplein, covering Dutch art and history with the seventeenth-century Golden Age collection at its centre.
Why travelers go
Because this is where the Dutch Golden Age is properly explained rather than sampled, and because the post-renovation building is one of the best museum interiors in Europe.
What is genuinely good
A definitive collection in a building rebuilt to display it, clear routing, and free entry for everyone up to 18. It also holds four Van Gogh paintings, so a visitor short on time gets some of that story here too.
Downsides and tourist traps
The crowd concentrates almost entirely in the Gallery of Honour, which makes the headline paintings the least comfortable part of the museum. At 25 euros it is the most expensive of Amsterdam's three essential museums, and most visitors are paying for all three.
Best for
Anyone interested in art or Dutch history, families given the free under-18 entry, and first-time visitors to Amsterdam who only have room for one museum.
Consider skipping if
You have a single day and a stronger interest in Van Gogh specifically, in which case the Van Gogh Museum next door is the better use of the time and 25 euros.
Practical advice
Start at the far end of the collection and work back toward the Gallery of Honour, which reverses the standard flow and puts you in the busiest room when everyone else has already left it. Book online for a timed slot. The museum sits on the Museumplein alongside the Van Gogh Museum, so the two combine without any travel.

Adults pay 25 euros. Admission is free for visitors up to 18 years old. Tickets are timed and are best booked in advance through the museum's own site.
Getting there
Tram 2 or 12 to Rijksmuseum, or tram 5 to Museumplein. It is a walk of roughly twenty minutes from Amsterdam Centraal, or a short ride on tram 2.
Where it sits
On the Museumplein in Amsterdam Zuid, sharing the square with the Van Gogh Museum and the Concertgebouw. This is a calm, green, well-off part of the city and a considerable contrast to the canal belt.
How long to allow
Two to three hours. The Golden Age floor alone is a solid ninety minutes if you are interested in it.
Accessibility
The building was comprehensively renovated and reopened in 2013 with lift access throughout, and the museum publishes detailed accessibility information for visitors.

The one Amsterdam museum that is hard to argue with. Book a slot, walk the collection backwards to dodge the crush, and take advantage of the free under-18 entry if you are travelling with family.
