Share your experienceMACBA charges 15,00 euros for a general admission entry ticket bought at the reception desk, and 13,50 euros for the same ticket bought online. The museum is Richard Meier's white modernist block dropped into the Raval, one of the densest and most working-class quarters of the old city, and that collision is a large part of what the building means. The collection concentrates on Catalan and Spanish art from the mid-twentieth century onward, with strong holdings in conceptual and post-conceptual work. The plaza outside is the part that made it internationally famous, and not for the art. Placa dels Angels has been one of the most filmed skate spots in the world for three decades. It costs nothing, it runs all day, and for a lot of visitors it is the better show.
What was great
A serious contemporary collection with real depth in Catalan and Spanish art, in a Meier building worth seeing on its own. Booking online saves 1,50 euros. The plaza outside is free, permanently busy with skaters, and one of the genuinely characterful public spaces in the city.
What nearly ruined the trip
Contemporary art is divisive and this collection makes few concessions to visitors who are not already interested. Fifteen euros at the desk is avoidable by booking online, which not everyone realises. The Raval immediately around it is lively but noticeably rougher at night than the Gothic Quarter.
