What it is
A museum in Munich's Kunstareal housing four collections in one Stephan Braunfels building: modern and contemporary art, the Neue Sammlung design museum, the Technical University's architecture museum, and the state collection of works on paper.
Why travelers go
For the Neue Sammlung, which is one of the strongest design collections anywhere and covers furniture, industrial design and vehicles, and for twentieth-century art shown alongside it rather than in isolation.
What is genuinely good
Four museums for one 10 euro ticket, 1 euro on Sundays, free for under-18s. The design collection is exceptional and underrated. It sits two minutes from the Alte Pinakothek, so a full museum day needs no travel.
Downsides and tourist traps
The four-in-one arrangement confuses people and the basement design museum is regularly missed entirely. Closed on Mondays. Sunday is cheap and correspondingly crowded. The surrounding district has little life outside museum hours.
Best for
Anyone interested in design or architecture as much as painting, budget travellers who can time a Sunday, and families given free under-18 entry.
Consider skipping if
You have one museum slot in Munich and prefer old masters, in which case the Alte Pinakothek across the square is the better ticket. Do not arrive on a Monday.

Go on a Sunday for the 1 euro rate but arrive at opening. Start in the basement with the Neue Sammlung, because that is the section people run out of time for. Combine with the Alte Pinakothek, two minutes away, for a full day.

Getting there
U2 to Theresienstrasse or Konigsplatz, or tram 27 to Pinakotheken. About twenty minutes on foot from Munich Hauptbahnhof.

The Kunstareal in Maxvorstadt, sharing the district with the Alte Pinakothek, the Neue Pinakothek, the Brandhorst and the Glyptothek. Quiet, green and entirely institutional.
How long to allow
Two to three hours to do all four collections properly. Ninety minutes if you pick two.

The building is served by lifts throughout and the collections publish accessibility information for visitors with reduced mobility.
