RuinMyTrip guide to Hofbrauhaus

Official Review

Written by RuinMyTrip Editorial from published research and official sources, not from a personal trip. It is not a traveler review and is never counted in the community rating. How we research.

What it is

Munich's state-owned beer hall on the Platzl, founded as the ducal brewery in 1589, with a thousand-seat ground floor hall, a brass band and Bavarian food.

Why travelers eat here

To stand inside the building every other beer hall in the world is imitating, and to drink a Mass while a band plays. It is a spectacle, and it is honest about being one.

What is genuinely good

Daily opening until midnight, litre steins, the band, the sheer scale of the room, and the regulars' stein lockers on the wall.

Downsides

Mediocre, overpriced food. Overwhelmingly tourist trade. Extremely loud. Long waits for a table in summer.

Best for

First-time visitors to Munich, and groups, who suit the long shared tables far better than couples do.

Consider eating elsewhere if

You want a good Bavarian meal. Augustiner-Keller and the Viktualienmarkt beer garden both do the food better with a fraction of the crowd.

Practical advice

Go for a late morning or mid-afternoon beer when the hall is calm enough to look at. Eat elsewhere. Shared tables are the norm, so ask before sitting down at one.

Prices and reservations

No reservation for the main hall; walk in and find a table. Upper floors take group bookings. Beer is sold by the Mass, a full litre.

Getting there

S-Bahn or U-Bahn to Marienplatz, then a three-minute walk east to the Platzl.

Where it sits

The Platzl, a small square in the old town two minutes from Marienplatz, surrounded by souvenir shops and the Hotel Platzl.

How long to allow

An hour for a beer, two if you eat.

The RuinMyTrip verdict

Worth one beer for the room and the band. Eat somewhere else, and go in the afternoon when you can actually see the place.

Open Every Day From Eleven Until Midnight, and Everyone Knows It

The Hofbrauhaus opens every day from 11.00 to 0.00, with the kitchen closing at 22.00 and last serving at 23.30. There is no reservation for the main hall and no closed day in the year. It is the most famous beer hall in the world, founded as the ducal brewery in 1589, and on any given evening the ground floor holds around a thousand people, a brass band, and a queue at the door. Regulars have lockers for their…
