Share your experienceThe Hofbrauhaus opens every day from 11.00 to 0.00, with the kitchen closing at 22.00 and last serving at 23.30. There is no reservation for the main hall and no closed day in the year. It is the most famous beer hall in the world, founded as the ducal brewery in 1589, and on any given evening the ground floor holds around a thousand people, a brass band, and a queue at the door. Regulars have lockers for their personal steins along one wall, which tells you the place is not purely a tourist exhibit, though it is substantially one. The food is Bavarian and competent rather than good. The beer, served in litre Mass, is the reason to be there, along with the noise, which is considerable.
What was great
Open every single day until midnight, which in Munich matters more than it sounds. Litre steins, a live band, and a genuine 400-year-old institution. Free to walk in and look even if you do not sit down.
What nearly ruined the trip
The food is the weakest part and priced as though it were not. It is overwhelmingly tourists, and the staff process them accordingly. Loud to the point where conversation is work, and finding a table on a summer evening can take half an hour.
