The Pinakothek der Moderne charges 10 euro admission with 7 euro reduced, and 1 euro on Sundays. Children and young people under 18 receive free admission. The Sunday rate is standing Bavarian policy across the state collections rather than a promotion, and it applies here exactly as it does at the Alte Pinakothek across the square. What makes this building unusual is that it houses four separate institutions: the modern art collection, the Neue Sammlung design museum, the architecture museum of the Technical University, and the state collection of works on paper. The design museum in the basement is the one most visitors underestimate and the one most of them end up talking about afterwards, because it covers everything from Bauhaus furniture to industrial design and a genuinely serious car collection.

What was great

Ten euro for four museums, dropping to 1 euro on Sundays, with under-18s free. The Neue Sammlung design collection is world class and consistently surprises people who came for the paintings. The Stephan Braunfels rotunda is a fine piece of museum architecture in its own right.

What nearly ruined the trip

Four institutions under one roof means uneven signage and visitors missing whole sections, particularly the basement design museum. Closed Mondays. Sundays are busy for the obvious reason. The Kunstareal district around it is institutional and quiet, with little to do outside the museums.
