One of the Bavarian State Painting Collections, in the Kunstareal museum quarter of Munich, holding European painting from the fourteenth to the eighteenth century including major Old German, Early Netherlandish, Italian and Flemish holdings.
For the Rubens rooms, which have no equal anywhere, and for Old German and Early Netherlandish painting shown at a depth that most national galleries cannot approach.
Nine euro regular admission, 6 euro reduced and 1 euro on Sundays, with under-18s free. A first-rank collection in a calm, well-lit building. It sits alongside the Neue Pinakothek and Pinakothek der Moderne, so a museum day needs no travel.
Sundays are busy precisely because of the 1 euro rate. Closed on Mondays. The Kunstareal is a quiet institutional district with little atmosphere, so there is not much reason to linger outside the museums.
Anyone with an interest in old master painting, budget travellers given the Sunday rate, and families since under-18s go free.
Pre-nineteenth-century painting does not interest you, in which case the Pinakothek der Moderne next door is the better ticket. Also check the day, because arriving on a Monday means not getting in at all.
Go on a Sunday for the 1 euro rate but arrive at opening, since everyone else in Munich knows about it too. Avoid Mondays entirely. Combine with the Neue Pinakothek or Pinakothek der Moderne, which are a two-minute walk away.
Regular admission is 9 euro and reduced is 6 euro, with Sunday admission at 1 euro. Admission is free for children and young people under the age of 18.
U2 to Theresienstrasse or Konigsplatz, or tram 27 to Pinakotheken. It is about twenty minutes on foot from Munich Hauptbahnhof.
The Kunstareal in Maxvorstadt, north of the centre, a purpose-built museum quarter shared with the Neue Pinakothek, the Pinakothek der Moderne, the Brandhorst and the Glyptothek. Quiet, institutional and green.
Two to three hours. The Rubens rooms alone can take an hour if you let them.
The museum is served by lifts and publishes accessibility information for visitors with reduced mobility.
One of the best-value great museums in Europe, and on Sundays it is almost free. Go early on a Sunday, never on a Monday, and give the Rubens rooms more time than you planned.
