The world's largest museum of science and technology, on an island in the Isar in central Munich, covering mining, aviation, shipping, physics, chemistry and astronomy across many halls.
For scale and for real objects. This is a museum of actual submarines, aircraft and machinery rather than a science centre of interactive panels, and there is nothing else quite this size.
Enormous, cheap for what it is, and strong on genuine artefacts. The reconstructed mine is a highlight. Family ticket pricing is generous.
Impossible to finish in one visit. The renovation has been running for years and closes sections in phases. English interpretation is patchy in the older galleries.
Families, anyone technically minded, and rainy days, of which Munich has plenty.
You have half a day. This needs a proper commitment or it becomes a route march past things you do not have time to read about.
Check which departments are open before you go. Start with the mine, which gets busy, then pick two or three other halls rather than trying to walk everything. A one-euro coin is needed as a deposit for the lockers.
Adult day ticket 16 euros, discounted 9 euros with valid ID, family ticket 33 euros for up to two adults with their own children aged 17 and under. An annual pass covering all three Munich sites is 50 euros, 25 reduced.
S-Bahn to Isartor then a five-minute walk across the bridge, or tram 16 to Deutsches Museum. It is a fifteen-minute walk from Marienplatz.
Museumsinsel, an island in the Isar just south of the old centre, with the river on both sides and a pleasant walk north along the bank into the Altstadt.
Half a day minimum. A full day is easy, and regulars come back repeatedly.
Lifts serve the main exhibition levels and level 1 can be reached by stairs or lift; some historic halls remain harder to navigate.
Sixteen euros for the largest science museum on earth is the best value in Munich. Check what is open, pick three halls, and do not try to see it all.

The Deutsches Museum on the Museumsinsel charges 16 euros for a day ticket for adults aged 18 and over, 9 euros discounted with valid ID, and 33 euros for a family ticket covering up to two adults with their own children aged 17 and under.
