RuinMyTrip asks: how do you choose blocos at Carnival when you do not know anybody there?

The Sambadrome is the easy part because you buy a seat. The blocos have no ticket and no door, there are hundreds of them, and which one is good seems to depend entirely on who you are standing with.

Rio de Janeiro sells itself on two postcards, Christ the Redeemer with arms spread over Corcovado and the cable car ride up Sugarloaf Mountain, and both still deliver, but neither is casual or cheap anymore.   • Book Christ the Redeemer tickets ahead online rather than at the gate, since the van plus statue combo runs roughly R$108 in low season up to R$168 in high season and access requires a pre-booked slot.
  • Sugarloaf's round trip cable car runs about R$170 for an adult in 2026; go a few hours before sunset to get daylight views plus the evening light without paying R$280 to R$350 for a dedicated VIP sunset package.
  • If you want to see a favela, book a vetted resident-led operator in Rocinha in advance rather than hiring a guide on the street, since profits from poorly run tours often do not reach the community at all.
  • Treat the Copacabana to Ipanema beachfront between 10pm and 2am as the highest-risk window for tourists specifically, since that is where armed robbery targeting visitors concentrates.
  • Keep your phone put away on the street and on transit; Rio averages one phone reported stolen or robbed roughly every seven minutes citywide.
  • If traveling for Carnival, book hotels far in advance of February 5 to 13, 2027, since rooms that run about R$400 a night the rest of the year have been quoted at R$1200 to R$2000 during Carnival week.
