Rio de Janeiro 2026: the views still earn it, and the South Zone is safer than the reputation

Christ the Redeemer and Sugarloaf still deliver. Ipanema and Leblon posted zero homicides in Q1 2026, violent crime is down for a third straight year, and the beaches, food, and music are not a myth.

Rio de Janeiro is still one of the most beautiful cities on earth. That is not marketing. Corcovado with Christ the Redeemer, the Bondinho up Sugarloaf, Ipanema in late light, and a Saturday feijoada are the reasons people keep coming back, and they are still good in 2026.

What improved

Violent lethality in Rio was down 12 percent in the first quarter of 2026 versus a year earlier, part of a third straight year of falling violent crime citywide. Ipanema and Leblon recorded zero homicides in that quarter. In May 2026 the city added 61 municipal guard officers for round-the-clock patrol of the Copacabana, Ipanema, and Leblon corridor, the largest such push since the 2016 Olympics. Base yourself in Ipanema or Leblon if that data matters to you. The food and the beach do not get worse when you move one neighborhood west of Copacabana.

Tickets and timing

Christ the Redeemer is a booked slot, not a wander-up. Van plus entry runs roughly 108 reals in low season to 168 in high season. Sugarloaf's two-stage cable car is about 170 reals round trip for an adult. Go a few hours before sunset and skip the 280 to 350 real VIP packages unless you want the glass of sparkling wine.

Carnival 2027 is February 5 through 13. Hotel rooms that sit around 400 reals most of the year have been quoted at 1,200 to 2,000 that week. Go then only if you want Carnival. The rest of the year, Rio is still a city where the views and the music are cheap relative to what they are.

Be straight about Copacabana

Copacabana robberies rose about 25 percent and thefts about 56 percent from 2024 to 2025. Phone theft is a citywide problem. Keep the phone away on the beachfront between 10pm and 2am. Brazil remains US Level 2. None of that cancels Sugarloaf. It tells you which six blocks to treat with respect. Full notes: Rio de Janeiro and the Rio guide.
