- Book and pay your Nairobi National Park ticket in advance through the KWS eCitizen system, non-resident adults pay $80 and children/students pay $40, a flat rate year-round.
- Skip walking around the CBD after dark, armed robbery targeting cars stuck in traffic is a real, reported risk there, base yourself in Karen, Langata, or Westlands instead.
- Use Uber or Bolt from JKIA rather than a random taxi tout, expect roughly KSH 2,500-3,000 (about $19-23) for a car into town, more once you hit traffic.
- If Nairobi is your springboard to the Maasai Mara, budget for the 224km road trip or a roughly 45-minute Wilson Airport flight ($130-200 one way), plus separate Mara park fees ($100/day low season, $200/day high season for non-residents) on top of what you already paid at Nairobi National Park.
- Keep an eye on the shilling, it has been holding near KES 129 to the dollar through 2026 with inflation bouncing between about 4.4% and 6.7%, so build in a small budget cushion.
