Practical tips
Editorial- Price the transfer before the room. Seaplane and speedboat transfers to your island are often the largest line item nobody quotes upfront, and there is no alternative once you have booked.
- Add $12 per person per night for the green tax at resorts, or $6 at smaller accommodation, on top of GST and service charge; the rate doubled on January 1, 2025.
- Budget the departure fee: foreign nationals now pay $50 in economy, $120 in business and $240 in first class, up from $30, $60 and $90.
- Do not pack alcohol. Importing alcohol into the Maldives is illegal, luggage is screened on arrival and bottles are confiscated.
- Know which product you are buying. Resorts on private islands can be licensed to serve alcohol; guesthouses on inhabited local islands cannot, and drinking is prohibited on beaches, streets and public areas there.
- Book the guesthouse route if you want the country rather than the postcard. It is far cheaper than the resort model and puts you on islands where Maldivians actually live, with the dry rules that come with that.
