Ratana charges 85 euros for the tasting menu without drinks, with a three-glass wine pairing at 25 euros. At lunch it serves the schiscetta: a single dish with a glass of wine, water and coffee for 24 euros, changing daily. Schiscetta is the Milanese word for the packed lunch factory workers carried, and using it for a 24 euro set lunch in a restaurant of this standing is a deliberate joke that also happens to be the best value in the neighbourhood. The kitchen cooks Milanese and Lombard dishes properly rather than reinterpreting them out of recognition: risotto giallo, mondeghili, cotoletta. The building is a converted early twentieth-century railway house with a garden, wedged among the Porta Nuova towers.

What was great

A serious Lombard kitchen with a 24 euro lunch, which is a genuine anomaly in this part of Milan. A garden in a district made of glass towers. Risotto and mondeghili cooked as they are supposed to be.

What nearly ruined the trip

The evening tasting menu at 85 euros plus pairings adds up quickly. It books out, particularly for the garden. Porta Nuova is a business district, so the surroundings are corporate rather than characterful.
