Official Review

What it is

A Lombard restaurant in a converted railway building with a garden in Porta Nuova, Milan, cooking traditional Milanese dishes alongside a tasting menu and a daily set lunch.

Why travelers eat here

For Milanese cooking taken seriously, and for a 24 euro lunch in a district where that price normally buys a sandwich.

What is genuinely good

Proper risotto giallo, mondeghili and cotoletta, a daily schiscetta lunch at 24 euros with wine included, and a garden under the Porta Nuova towers.

Downsides

The evening tasting menu plus pairings is a real bill. Books out, especially the garden. A business-district setting.

Best for

Anyone who wants to eat Milanese food rather than international fine dining, and anyone in the city on business at lunchtime.

Consider eating elsewhere if

You are staying near the Duomo and do not want to travel. It is a metro ride north.

Practical advice

Take the schiscetta at lunch if the evening prices are too much: it is the same kitchen for a quarter of the money. Book the garden in advance in warm weather. The dish changes daily, so do not go with a fixed idea.

Prices and reservations

Tasting menu 85 euros without drinks, three-glass wine pairing 25 euros. The schiscetta lunch is 24 euros including a glass of wine, water and coffee. A la carte also available. Reservations online.

Getting there

Metro line 5 to Isola, or line 2 and 5 to Garibaldi, both about five minutes on foot.

Where it sits

Via Gaetano de Castillia in Porta Nuova, beside the Biblioteca degli Alberi park and under the Bosco Verticale towers, with the Isola district behind.

How long to allow

An hour at lunch, two and a half for the tasting menu.

The RuinMyTrip verdict

Go at lunch for the schiscetta, which is the same kitchen at a quarter of the price. Book the garden if the weather is on your side.

Eighty-Five Euros for the Tasting Menu, Twenty-Four for the Working Lunch

Ratana charges 85 euros for the tasting menu without drinks, with a three-glass wine pairing at 25 euros. At lunch it serves the schiscetta: a single dish with a glass of wine, water and coffee for 24 euros, changing daily. Schiscetta is the Milanese word for the packed lunch factory workers carried, and using it for a 24 euro set lunch in a restaurant of this standing is a deliberate joke that also happens to be…
