Official Review

What it is

Milan's gothic cathedral, begun in 1386 and finished over six centuries, with an interior, a museum, an archaeological area and roof terraces open to visitors.

Why travelers go

The terraces. Walking among the spires and buttresses of a gothic cathedral roof is something almost no other building in Europe permits, and it changes how you see the front of it from the square.

What is genuinely good

The roof walk, the apse windows, the sheer scale of the interior, and a museum that explains six centuries of construction.

Downsides and tourist traps

A confusing menu of ticket types. Long midday queues. A strict dress code enforced at the door. The lift to the terraces costs more than the stairs.

Best for

Every visitor to Milan. If you buy one ticket in the city, buy this one.

Consider skipping if

You are afraid of heights or cannot manage stairs, in which case buy the cathedral and museum ticket and skip the terraces.

Practical advice

Buy the complete visit online and go to the terraces first thing or in the last two hours. Cover shoulders and knees or you will be turned away. Take the stairs if you are able: the queue is shorter than for the lift.

Tickets and reservations

Complete visit with terraces from 22 euros full, 11 reduced. Cathedral and museum from 8 euros full, 4 reduced. Terraces alone from 16 euros full, 8 reduced.

Getting there

Metro lines 1 and 3 to Duomo, which surfaces directly onto the piazza.

Where it sits

Piazza del Duomo, the exact centre of Milan, with the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II on one side and the shopping streets radiating out from it.

How long to allow

Two hours for the complete visit, more if the queues are long.

Accessibility

The cathedral and museum are step-free; the terraces are reachable by lift, though the roof walk itself is uneven and has steps.

The RuinMyTrip verdict

Buy the complete visit, go up first, and cover your shoulders. The roof of the Duomo is the best twenty-two euros in Milan.

Twenty-Two Euros to Walk on the Roof of the Cathedral

The Duomo sells tickets by what you want to see. The complete visit, covering the cathedral interior, the terraces and the museum, starts from 22 euros full price and 11 euros reduced. A cathedral and museum ticket without the terraces starts from 8 euros full and 4 reduced, and the terraces alone start from 16 euros full and 8 reduced. The terraces are the reason to pay the full price. You walk on the roof, among…
