What it is
Milan's principal picture gallery, in the Palazzo Brera alongside the art academy, holding northern Italian painting from the fourteenth to the twentieth century, now extended into Palazzo Citterio.
Why travelers go
For Mantegna's Dead Christ and Piero della Francesca's Brera Madonna, two of the most radical paintings of the Italian Renaissance, hanging within a few metres of each other.
What is genuinely good
An outstanding collection with genuine masterpieces rather than school pieces, a four euro ticket for 18 to 25 year olds, and far fewer people than the cathedral.
Downsides and tourist traps
Expensive at full price. Little help for a visitor who does not already know the period. Audioguides cost extra.
Best for
Anyone who likes Renaissance painting, and anyone aged 18 to 25, for whom this is the best four euros in Milan.
Consider skipping if
Italian Renaissance painting leaves you cold. In that case the Museo del Novecento gives you the twentieth century instead.
Practical advice
Take the audioguide if the period is new to you; twenty euros without it is a lot of unexplained painting. Go on a weekday morning. The Palazzo Citterio extension is included, so leave time for it.

Grande Brera full 20.00 euros, reduced 4.00 euros for 18 to 25 year olds. Audioguides 5.00 euros, radioguides 2.00 euros. School groups enter free with compulsory booking.
Getting there
Metro line 2 to Lanza or line 3 to Montenapoleone, both a five-minute walk. It is ten minutes on foot from the Duomo.
Where it sits
The Brera district, a grid of narrow streets north of the Duomo full of galleries, bars and the art academy, and one of the more pleasant parts of central Milan to walk in.
How long to allow
Two hours, three with Palazzo Citterio.
Accessibility
Lifts serve the gallery floors and the route through the collection is step-free.

Go for the Mantegna. Twenty euros is fair, four euros for the under-26s is a bargain, and it is the quietest great gallery in Italy.
