Two Thousand Nine Hundred Krona, All of It Cooked Over Fire
Review of Ekstedt
Been to Stockholm? This page needs you more than it needs us.
A first-hand review outranks desk research every time, and yours will sit above this one.
Share your experienceEkstedt charges 2,900 SEK for the set menu, with a wine pairing at 2,300 SEK and a selected wine pairing at 3,800. There is no gas and no electricity in the kitchen. Everything is cooked over birch wood: a fire pit, a wood-fired oven, a cast iron pan set into the flames and a birch-smoked flue. That constraint is the entire concept and it is not a gimmick, because it changes what the food tastes like in ways you notice immediately. The dining room is small, dark and centred on the open kitchen, so you watch the fire being worked all evening.
What was great
A kitchen with no gas or electricity, which produces flavours no conventional restaurant gets near. An open fire you sit and watch. A set menu that is genuinely a single idea followed through.
What nearly ruined the trip
Two thousand nine hundred krona before wine, and the pairings roughly double it. Small, so it books out. Everything tastes of smoke to some degree, which is the point and will not suit everyone.
