Share your experienceZur letzten Instanz charges 6 euros for pickled vegetables and 10 euros for matjes with yoghurt and red onion, which places it firmly in the ordinary-prices bracket for a restaurant that has been trading since 1621. It claims to be the oldest restaurant in Berlin and the claim holds up better than most: the building is early seventeenth century, the tiled corner stove is original, and Napoleon, Beethoven and Chirac have all reportedly eaten here, which the restaurant mentions rather more often than necessary. The cooking is straightforward Berlin food, and the reason to come is the room and the continuity rather than any culinary ambition.
What was great
Four hundred years in the same building, with an original tiled stove and a genuinely old dining room. Normal prices, which for a restaurant with this much history is unusual. Two minutes from the medieval quarter.
What nearly ruined the trip
The cooking is solid rather than exciting. The historic-guest roll call is laid on thick. It is small, so a table needs booking, and the Nikolaiviertel around it is a postwar reconstruction that some find twee.
