The collection is deliberately local. This is art made in Berlin from 1870 onward, which means the Secession, Dada, New Objectivity, the divided city and what came after reunification. It is the story of one city told through the art it produced, rather than a survey assembled from elsewhere. That focus is the appeal and the limitation. If you want a broad museum this is the wrong one, and the Gemaldegalerie or the Neue Nationalgalerie will suit you better. If you want to understand why Berlin looks and behaves the way it does, this is the more useful hour.
What was great
Reduced 7 euro admission for everyone on the first Wednesday of each month, free for under 18s and free for refugees, which is an unusually broad set of concessions. The building is a converted glass warehouse with generous, well-lit space, and the Berlin-specific focus makes it genuinely different from the national collections.
What nearly ruined the trip
The collection is narrow by design, so visitors expecting a general modern art museum can find it thin. The first Wednesday is correspondingly busy. It sits in Kreuzberg away from the Museum Island cluster, so it needs a deliberate trip.
