Share your experienceThe Topography of Terror is free admission and opens daily 10 am to 8 pm, with the outdoor areas open until nightfall. It stands on the ground where the Gestapo headquarters, the SS leadership and the Reich Security Main Office stood. The buildings are gone; what remains is the site itself, a surviving stretch of the Berlin Wall along Niederkirchnerstrasse, and an exhibition that does something unusual and uncomfortable. Most Holocaust memorials document what was done to people. This one documents who did it: the administrators, the desk officers, the career police officials, with names, photographs and biographies. It is the institutional machinery examined at close range, and it is harder to walk away from than a memorial.
What was great
Free admission and open until 8 pm, which is later than almost any museum in the city and makes it possible after a full day. It examines perpetrators rather than only victims, which is rare and important. A long surviving section of the Berlin Wall runs along the site boundary at no cost.
What nearly ruined the trip
It is relentless, text-heavy and takes concentration, and there is no light way through it. The indoor exhibition is a single dense hall that gets crowded in bad weather. The outdoor trench exhibition is exposed, so a wet or cold day materially changes the visit.
