What it is
A documentation centre and outdoor exhibition in Kreuzberg on the site of the former Gestapo and SS headquarters, covering the institutions of Nazi terror, alongside a preserved stretch of the Berlin Wall on Niederkirchnerstrasse.
Why travelers go
Because it is the one major Berlin site that examines the perpetrators as individuals and as an institution, and because standing on the actual ground where those offices stood does something a museum elsewhere cannot.
What is genuinely good
Free, open until 8 pm daily, and rigorous. The perpetrator focus fills a real gap in how this history is usually presented. A substantial section of the Berlin Wall runs along the site and costs nothing to walk.
Downsides and tourist traps
Extremely text-heavy and emotionally heavy, with no relief anywhere in the route. The indoor hall is one dense space that fills up when the weather turns. The outdoor trench exhibition is unsheltered.
Best for
Anyone serious about twentieth-century German history, visitors on a budget, and travellers who want an evening option since it stays open until 8 pm.
Consider skipping if
You are travelling with young children, or you have already done the Jewish Museum and the Holocaust Memorial on the same day. Three of these in one day is more than most people can take in.
Practical advice
Go late; the 8 pm close makes this one of the few substantial sites you can do at the end of a day, and it is quieter then. Allow at least ninety minutes and do not stack it with another heavy site. The Wall section outside is worth ten minutes on its own even if you skip the exhibition.

Free admission. Open daily 10 am to 8 pm, with outdoor areas open until nightfall and 8 pm at the latest.
Getting there
Potsdamer Platz on the S1, S2, S25, U2 and regional lines is about eight minutes on foot. Kochstrasse on the U6 is a similar distance from the east.
Where it sits
Niederkirchnerstrasse in Kreuzberg, between Potsdamer Platz and Checkpoint Charlie, alongside the Martin-Gropius-Bau. The Jewish Museum is a fifteen-minute walk south and the Holocaust Memorial ten minutes north.
How long to allow
Ninety minutes to two hours to read properly. Forty-five minutes if you take the outdoor trench exhibition and the Wall only.
Accessibility
The documentation centre and outdoor areas are step-free and the site publishes accessibility information for visitors.

The most important free site in Berlin and the one that asks the hardest question. Go in the evening when it is quieter, allow more time than you expect, and do not pair it with another Holocaust site on the same day.
