One Euro Sixty for the Custard Tart Everyone Else Is Copying
Review of Pasteis de Belem
Been to Lisbon? This page needs you more than it needs us.
A first-hand review outranks desk research every time, and yours will sit above this one.
Share your experiencePasteis de Belem sells its pastel de nata at 1.60 euros each and 9.60 euros for a packet of six. There is no reservation and no way to skip the queue except to sit down. This is the original. The recipe came from the Jeronimos monastery next door in 1837, it has not left the family since, and the shop still makes them behind a door only a handful of people are allowed through. Everywhere else in Portugal sells a pastel de nata; this is the one they are all approximating. The queue outside is for takeaway. The rooms inside, which run back much further than the frontage suggests, are usually quicker and let you eat them at the correct temperature, which is straight out of the oven, dusted with cinnamon.
What was great
One euro sixty for something genuinely singular. Warm from the oven, which is a different object from the cold ones sold elsewhere. The tiled back rooms seat hundreds and most tourists never look past the takeaway queue.
What nearly ruined the trip
The takeaway queue is long and visible and pulls people into it unnecessarily. It is in Belem, a tram ride from the centre, and the whole area is heaving by mid-morning. A packet of six is a commitment.
