Share your experienceThe Vatican Museums charge 20.00 euros for a full entry ticket without online booking and 10.00 euros reduced, with online booking adding a 5.00 euro skip-the-line fee. They open Monday to Saturday from 08.00 to 20.00, with final entry at 18.00, and on the last Sunday of the month from 09.00 to 14.00 with free entry. The museums are seven kilometres of galleries ending in the Sistine Chapel, and almost everyone walks them in the same direction at the same pace. The Raphael Rooms, the map gallery and the Egyptian collection are all on the route, and all are treated by most visitors as an obstacle between the entrance and Michelangelo. They are not. The Gallery of Maps is one of the most beautiful rooms in Europe, and the Raphael Rooms would be the main attraction of any other museum on earth.
What was great
The Sistine Chapel, the Raphael Rooms and the Gallery of Maps in one ticket. Free entry on the last Sunday of the month. Early 08.00 opening, which is the only sensible time to arrive.
What nearly ruined the trip
The crowds are the worst of any museum in Europe and the one-way route means you cannot escape them. The Sistine Chapel is a slow shuffle with guards shouting for silence. Booking online costs 5 euros more, not less, which surprises everyone.
