Share your experienceThe Museo Nazionale Romano charges 15.00 euros full price and 2.00 euros reduced. It opens Tuesday to Sunday from 9.00 to 19.00, with last admission at 18.00, and closes on Mondays. It is not one building. The ticket covers Palazzo Massimo, Palazzo Altemps, the Baths of Diocletian and the Crypta Balbi, which between them hold the best Roman painting and sculpture in the city. The frescoes from the Villa of Livia at Palazzo Massimo, a whole garden painted around a room, are the finest surviving Roman wall painting anywhere. And almost nobody goes. Palazzo Massimo is two minutes from Termini station and is routinely empty while queues wrap around the Colosseum a mile away.
What was great
Four museums on one ticket for fifteen euros. The Villa of Livia garden room. The Boxer at Rest. Genuine quiet in a city where nothing else is quiet. Two minutes from Termini.
What nearly ruined the trip
Almost all labelling is in Italian, and English support is minimal. The Crypta Balbi has been temporarily closed. Monday closure. The neighbourhood immediately around Termini is the least appealing part of central Rome.
