What it is
Italy's national museum of Roman antiquities, split across four sites in central Rome, all covered by one ticket: Palazzo Massimo, Palazzo Altemps, the Baths of Diocletian and the Crypta Balbi.
Why travelers go
The frescoes. The painted garden room from the Villa of Livia and the Villa Farnesina wall paintings at Palazzo Massimo are the best surviving Roman painting anywhere, and you will very likely have them to yourself.
What is genuinely good
Four sites on one ticket, extraordinary frescoes and sculpture, almost no crowds, and a location two minutes from the main station.
Downsides and tourist traps
Italian-only labelling in most rooms. Crypta Balbi temporarily closed. Closed Mondays. The Termini surroundings are grim.
Best for
Anyone on a second visit to Rome, and anyone who wants Roman art without queueing for it.
Consider skipping if
It is your first day in Rome and you have not yet seen the Forum. Start there instead.
Practical advice
Go to Palazzo Massimo first and take the top floor before anything else, because that is where the frescoes are. The ticket stays valid across the sites, so spread them over the days rather than forcing them into one.
Tickets and reservations
Full price 15.00 euros, reduced 2.00 euros, valid across all sites. Holders of participating museum cards pay 10.00 euros. A ticket for the Aula Ottagona alone is 5.00 euros. Free entry applies on the first Sunday of the month.
Getting there
Palazzo Massimo is two minutes from Termini station on foot. Palazzo Altemps is near Piazza Navona, and the Baths of Diocletian are across the road from Termini.

Two hours for Palazzo Massimo alone, a full day if you do all the open sites.
