What it is
The papal collections in Vatican City, running through some seven kilometres of galleries from Egyptian antiquities and classical sculpture to the Raphael Rooms and the Sistine Chapel.
Why travelers go
The Sistine Chapel ceiling and the Raphael Rooms are among the handful of things in Europe that genuinely have to be seen rather than reproduced. The classical sculpture court and the Gallery of Maps would each be a destination on their own.
What is genuinely good
An unmatched collection, an 08.00 opening, free entry on the last Sunday of the month, and a route that takes in four or five world-class collections on the way to the chapel.
Downsides and tourist traps
Severe crowding on a fixed one-way route. Online booking costs 5 euros extra rather than less. The last-Sunday free day is so busy it is barely worth it. Closed most Sundays.
Best for
Every visitor to Rome, at least once, and anyone interested in Renaissance painting.
Consider skipping if
You cannot arrive early and crowds ruin things for you. Between 11.00 and 15.00 in summer this is genuinely unpleasant.
Practical advice
Book the 08.00 slot and walk fast to the Sistine Chapel first, then double back for the Raphael Rooms and the maps when the crowd has moved past. Shoulders and knees must be covered or you will be turned away at the door.
Tickets and reservations
Full entry 20.00 euros without online booking, reduced 10.00 euros. Online booking adds a 5.00 euro skip-the-line fee. Free entry on the last Sunday of the month, 09.00 to 14.00, with final entry at 12.30.
Getting there
Metro line A to Ottaviano, then a ten-minute walk around the Vatican wall to the museum entrance, which is not the same as the entrance to St Peter's.
Where it sits
Viale Vaticano, on the north side of Vatican City, about fifteen minutes on foot from St Peter's Square around the outside of the walls.
How long to allow
Three hours at a brisk pace, and that is with skipping things.
Accessibility
Step-free routes and lifts are available throughout and wheelchairs can be borrowed free, though the distances involved are considerable.
