Practical tips
Editorial- Do not pack a vape device, even in a checked bag: fines for vape possession rose to as much as S$10,000 under a law effective May 1, 2026, and it applies even to passengers transiting Changi Airport.
- Skip buying gum before you land: import and sale of chewing gum has been banned in Singapore since 1992, with an exemption only for therapeutic dental gum sold with a prescription.
- Always use a marked crossing or pedestrian bridge: crossing within 50 metres of one, or against a red light, carries an on the spot S$50 fine that can rise to S$1,000 with possible jail time for repeat offenders.
- Skip the physical transit card if your bank card is contactless: it taps directly onto SimplyGo for MRT fares between about S$1.28 and S$2.57, or buy a Singapore Tourist Pass from roughly S$22 for a day of unlimited rides.
- Eat at hawker centres over hotel restaurants: a full meal runs S$4.50 to S$10 a person at a hawker stall versus S$75 to S$100 per person at a top restaurant for comparable quality.
- Book Gardens by the Bay and the Marina Bay Sands SkyPark online in advance and check time slots, since SkyPark evening tickets that catch sunset cost more than daytime entry.
- Save GST receipts over S$100 from participating stores and claim the 9 percent Tourist Refund Scheme at a self help kiosk in Changi Airport or the Singapore Cruise Centre before you fly out.
