Singapore hotel tax 2026: 9 percent GST on the room rate

Singapore's goods and services tax stands at 9 percent in 2026 according to the Ministry of Finance, so a 300 dollar room carries 27 dollars of tax a night.

The rate

Singapore's goods and services tax is 9 percent in 2026, and that is the government tax a visitor meets on a hotel bill. The Ministry of Finance sets out the history on its own goods and services tax page: the rate began at 3 percent in 1994, moved to 7 percent in 2007, then to 8 percent in 2023 and 9 percent in 2024. Nothing later appears on that page, so 9 percent is the figure that applies through 2026.

What a stay costs

Take a room advertised at 300 Singapore dollars per night. GST at 9 percent adds 27 dollars, so one night is 327 dollars. Four nights is 1,200 dollars of room rate and 108 dollars of tax, for a total of 1,308 dollars. On a two week trip at that price the tax alone reaches 378 dollars, which is worth building into a budget rather than discovering at the desk.

What sits beside it

Singapore has no separate nightly bed charge listed alongside GST on the ministry page, so unlike Vienna or Amsterdam there is no percentage stacked on top of the consumption tax. Most hotels do add a service charge of their own, but that is a business decision rather than a rate set by the tax authority.

What we could not settle from a primary source is exactly how a hotel service charge is treated for GST purposes, so the final line on a Singapore bill can sit above the 9 percent worked out here.
