Miami Art Week 2026: the dates, the fairs, and the week most people book wrong

Miami Art Week 2026 runs from the end of November into the first week of December, and the single most useful thing to understand before you book is that it is not one fair. Art Basel Miami Beach is the anchor, but the week is a dozen separate fairs spread across the island and the mainland, each with its own dates, its own preview day and its own neighbourhood. Booking for Art Basel alone and arriving on the 4th means missing three days that a lot of people think are the better half of the week.

The dates that actually matter

Read that table as one block rather than four rows. The citywide week effectively opens on Tuesday 1 December with the Untitled preview and does not close until SCOPE finishes on the 7th. 1 to 7 December is the travel window. If you are choosing dates and you are not tied to a specific opening, that is the span to book, and a Tuesday to Monday trip catches every fair on the list.

What this costs you if you get it wrong

Two mistakes are expensive and both are avoidable.

The first is booking Thursday to Sunday around Art Basel itself. You will pay peak Art Week hotel rates for the busiest three days and see the least of the week. Untitled and NADA are open before Art Basel starts, and the Tuesday and Wednesday are noticeably calmer at every venue.

The second is booking on Miami Beach without checking what you are actually here for. Art Basel, Untitled and SCOPE are on the island. NADA is on the mainland, and so is most of what is worth eating and most of the gallery programme outside the fairs. Miami is two cities joined by causeways: a room in Brickell or downtown is usually cheaper, puts you on the free Metromover, and is a twenty to forty minute ride from the Convention Center depending on traffic. A room two blocks from the sand is the right choice only if the beach is genuinely part of the trip.

The week around the fairs

Wynwood is where Art Week stops being a ticket and starts being a city. The mural district is free, it is twenty walkable blocks, and the bars and breweries there have no door policy worth the name, which is the opposite of South Beach. NADA sits on its northern edge. If you have one unstructured evening, spend it there.

The Design District, further north, runs its own programme during the week and is worth an hour in daylight. The Perez Art Museum Miami is on the downtown bayfront, is free on Thursday evenings after 5pm, and its Herzog and de Meuron building is a better piece of architecture than most of what is hanging inside it. Vizcaya, in Coconut Grove, is the one sight here that would be a destination in any city, and it closes at 4:30pm and shuts entirely on Tuesdays, which catches people out every year.

For the evenings: Joe's Stone Crab is open, because Florida stone crab season runs 15 October to 1 May and December is the middle of it. The takeaway counter next door serves the same claws without the wait, which during Art Week is the difference between eating at nine and eating at eleven. Versailles on Calle Ocho is a four minute detour for a cortadito at the window and is the most Miami thing available to a visitor.

Practical, in the order you will need it

• Book the room before the flight. Art Week moves hotel prices across the whole county, not just near the Convention Center. The week sells out in a way ordinary December does not.
• Do not rent a car. Miami Beach hotels charge for parking nightly on top of the room, street parking on the island is metered and app based, and Art Week traffic on the causeways is genuinely bad. Rideshare the causeway crossings and use the free Metromover downtown.
• Check each fair's own hours before you build a day. Preview days are ticketed differently from public days and several fairs open late on one evening and not others.
• Leave one afternoon unplanned. The gallery and satellite programme around the fairs is where most people end up having the better time, and it is not schedulable in advance from another city.
• December is dry season. Warm, low humidity, and priced accordingly. This is the good weather, and you are paying for it.

The part of an Art Week trip nobody plans for is that you will be in a crowded city full of people doing exactly what you are doing, and you will not know a single one of them.
