A 1916 Italianate villa and formal gardens on Biscayne Bay in Coconut Grove, built as a winter residence and now a public museum.
For the gardens and the bay frontage, which are better than the house and are the closest thing Miami has to a European estate. It is the one sight here that would still be a destination in a city with more competition.
Formal terraces stepping down to the water, the stone barge offshore, and interiors that hold their illusion. Reachable on the Metrorail without a car. Currently discounted while restoration continues.
Live restoration work, a short opening day that ends at 4:30pm, closed Tuesdays, a real journey from the beach, and limited shade in summer.
Anybody who wants one hour in Miami that is not about the beach, garden and architecture people, and photographers who can arrive early.
You are on a two day beach trip and staying on the island, in which case the round trip eats most of an afternoon. Skip it also if scaffolding would ruin it for you, because the work is ongoing.
Allow two hours minimum and arrive before 2pm. Check what is currently closed for restoration before you go, because the discount exists for a reason. Tuesdays are closed.
Adult admission, ages 13 and over, is listed at 25 dollars and currently reduced to 20 dollars during on site restoration. Visitors identifying as disabled receive complimentary admission along with an accompanying caregiver.
Vizcaya station on the Metrorail is a short walk away, which makes it one of the few Miami sights that is straightforward without a car. From Miami Beach it is a causeway crossing and traffic dependent.
Coconut Grove, on the mainland side of Biscayne Bay, in a leafy low rise part of the city well away from the beach. The Grove village centre is a short distance away and is a good place to eat afterwards.
Two hours, and more if the light is good. One hour is enough only for the house.
The estate publishes accessibility information, and complimentary admission is offered to visitors identifying as disabled and to an accompanying caregiver.
The best single sight in Miami, and better value than usual while the restoration discount stands. Go early in the day and give the gardens more time than you think they need.
