Share your experienceVizcaya is a 1916 Italianate villa on Biscayne Bay in Coconut Grove, built as a winter house for an industrialist who wanted somewhere in Florida that looked four hundred years old. It is the most photographed interior in Miami Dade County and, unusually for a house museum, the gardens are the better half: formal terraces stepping down to the water, a stone barge sitting offshore, and sightlines that were designed to be walked rather than looked at. Adult admission for visitors aged 13 and over is listed at 25 dollars and is currently reduced to 20 while on site restoration work continues. That discount is the honest reason to come this year rather than next: you are trading some scaffolding for a fifth off, and the parts under work are announced rather than discovered on arrival. It opens daily except Tuesdays, 9:30am to 4:30pm, which is a short day by museum standards and the single thing most visitors get wrong. A 3pm arrival is not enough. The house alone absorbs an hour, the gardens another, and the light on the bay is worth staying for. The practical trap is location. Vizcaya is on the mainland in Coconut Grove, not on Miami Beach, and getting there from a South Beach hotel is a causeway crossing plus traffic. It sits on the Metrorail at Vizcaya station, which almost nobody uses and which makes it one of the easiest major sights in the city to reach without a car if you are already based downtown or in Brickell. It is not a collection you come for. The furnishings are the point only insofar as they hold the illusion together. Come for the rooms, the loggia and the bay.
What was great
The gardens are genuinely world class and most visitors underrate them. The bay frontage and the stone barge are unlike anything else in Florida. Admission is currently reduced to 20 dollars from 25 during restoration. It is on the Metrorail, so it is reachable without a car, which is rare for a Miami sight.
What nearly ruined the trip
Restoration work is live, so some of what you came for may be behind scaffolding. Closing at 4:30pm and shutting entirely on Tuesdays catches people out constantly. It is a real journey from Miami Beach, and a lot of visitors underestimate the causeway. Shade is limited on the terraces and in August that matters.
