RuinMyTrip guide to Perez Art Museum Miami

Official Review

Written by RuinMyTrip Editorial from published research and official sources, not from a personal trip. It is not a traveler review and is never counted in the community rating. How we research.

What it is

Miami's museum of modern and contemporary art, on the downtown bayfront in Museum Park, in a Herzog and de Meuron building known for its hanging gardens.

Why travelers go

For the building and the bayfront veranda as much as the art, and for a collection that takes the Americas and the Caribbean seriously rather than treating them as a side gallery.

What is genuinely good

Architecture that justifies the trip on its own, a genuinely distinctive collection focus, a free Thursday evening, and a location on the free Metromover.

Downsides and tourist traps

Two closed days a week, a collection smaller than the building implies, and a downtown setting that is convenient rather than charming.

Best for

Anybody staying downtown or in Brickell, architecture people, and travelers who want one cultural afternoon that is not on the beach.

Consider skipping if

You want a large survey collection, or your trip only covers Tuesday and Wednesday.

Practical advice

Go Thursday evening if the dates allow: open until 9pm and free after 5pm. Otherwise arrive by 4pm on a 6pm close. Use the Metromover rather than paying to park.

Tickets and reservations

Adult admission 18 dollars. Free to everyone on Thursdays after 5pm.

Getting there

Museum Park in downtown Miami, served by the free Metromover. Walkable from most downtown and Brickell hotels.

Where it sits

Downtown bayfront next to the Frost Science Museum, on the mainland rather than Miami Beach. The immediate blocks are commercial; the waterfront itself is the pleasant part.

How long to allow

Ninety minutes to two hours including the terrace.

Accessibility

The museum publishes visitor accessibility information and the building is step free from the park level.

The RuinMyTrip verdict

Go on a Thursday evening. Free after five, open until nine, and the veranda over Biscayne Bay at dusk is the best thing in Miami that costs nothing.

★★★★☆ Official Review

Eighteen Dollars, Free After Five on Thursdays, and the Building Is the Best Exhibit

PAMM sits on the downtown bayfront in a Herzog and de Meuron building whose hanging gardens and deep shaded veranda are the most successful piece of architecture in the city. The collection is modern and contemporary with a real emphasis on art of the Americas and the Caribbean, which is the correct emphasis for Miami and makes it a genuinely different museum rather than a smaller version of a New York one.
