RuinMyTrip guide to Wynwood Walls

Official Review

Written by RuinMyTrip Editorial from published research and official sources, not from a personal trip. It is not a traveler review and is never counted in the community rating. How we research.

What it is

A ticketed outdoor courtyard of commissioned street art in Wynwood, at the centre of a much larger free mural district.

Why travelers go

For a concentrated, current, well curated set of large scale murals in one shaded space, and for the neighbourhood around it, which is the most approachable nightlife in Miami.

What is genuinely good

Curation and density, rotating work, shelter and shade inside the complex, and a neighbourhood that rewards staying into the evening.

Downsides and tourist traps

The same art form continues free immediately outside. Crowded on weekend afternoons. Hot and exposed in summer.

Best for

Photographers, first time visitors who want one dense stop, and anybody planning to stay in Wynwood for the evening.

Consider skipping if

You are happy walking and looking for yourself, in which case NW 2nd Avenue and the surrounding blocks give you most of it for nothing.

Practical advice

Walk the free blocks first, then decide on the ticket. Weekday afternoons over weekends. Bring water. Late afternoon into evening is the best use of the trip, because the neighbourhood is the other half of it.

Tickets and reservations

The courtyard is ticketed. The surrounding mural district is free and requires nothing.

Getting there

On the mainland, north of downtown. The free Wynwood trolley loops the district, and the neighbourhood is walkable once you are in it.

Where it sits

Wynwood, a former warehouse district now given over to murals, galleries, breweries and bars. Low rise, walkable, and a completely different city from Miami Beach.

How long to allow

An hour inside, two to three hours for the district, and an evening if you stay.

Accessibility

The courtyard is at ground level and step free. The surrounding streets are flat, though pavement quality varies block to block.

The RuinMyTrip verdict

Worth it if you want the curated version and the shade. Walk the free blocks first so the decision is yours rather than the fence's.

The Ticketed Courtyard Is Good. The Free Twenty Blocks Around It Are the Reason to Come

Wynwood Walls is a ticketed outdoor courtyard of commissioned murals in the middle of Wynwood, open daily from 10:30am to 6:30pm. It is well curated, the work rotates, and it is a pleasant shaded hour. It is also the clearest example in Miami of a city charging admission to something that is also free fifty metres away. The twenty blocks surrounding it are covered in commissioned murals that cost nothing, and…
