Lisbon tourist tax 2026: 4 euros per person per night

Lisbon municipal tourist tax on overnight stays is 4 euros per person per night in 2026, a figure set by the city notice published in its own municipal bulletin.

Lisbon municipal tourist tax is 4 euros per person per night in 2026. The figure comes from the city own Boletim Municipal, where edital 234/2024 records the change to the regulation that carried the unit value to 4 euros per overnight stay, in force from 1 September 2024.

Who collects it

That notice states the change was published in the Diario da Republica of 26 August 2024 and points anyone in doubt to the city finance department, which runs the tax. The charge falls on the guest and is handed over by the accommodation operator, which is why it appears as its own line at checkout rather than inside the advertised room rate.

A worked example

Two adults staying five nights in Lisbon in 2026 pay 40 euros in tourist tax, on top of the room price and Portuguese VAT. One traveller on a three night city break pays 12 euros. On a cheap hostel bed the tax can be a tenth of the nightly price, while on a five star room it disappears into the rounding.

What is still unclear

The notice sets only the unit value. Any cap on how many nights of a single stay are taxed, and the age below which a guest is exempt, sit in the wider municipal regulation rather than in the notice that fixed the 4 euro figure, so both are worth checking on the operator invoice.
