Barcelona tourist tax 2026: 4.50 euros plus 5 euro city surcharge, still climbing
by RuinMyTrip Editorial · Aug 26, 2026
From 1 April 2026 Barcelona adds a 4.50 euro Catalan rate plus a 5 euro city surcharge per person per night, plus 10 percent VAT. Five-star stays land around 12 euros each. The city surcharge rises 1 euro a year through 2029.
Barcelona's tourist tax effectively doubled at the top of the market on 1 April 2026. It is a combined 4.50 euro Catalan regional rate plus a 5 euro Barcelona municipal surcharge, per person, per night, plus 10 percent VAT on top of that.
What a night actually adds
| Stay type | About, per person per night |
|---|---|
| Five-star hotel | 12 euros (up from 7.50 euros in 2025) |
| Four-star hotel | 8.40 euros |
| Short-term rental | 9.50 euros |
| Cruise passenger | up to 11 euros, depending on how long the ship is docked |
The Barcelona portion of the surcharge is scheduled to rise another euro a year through 2029. This is not a one-off 2026 bump.
The rental supply is shrinking at the same time
Every remaining tourist-apartment licence is set to expire by November 2028. The city has been catching about 300 illegal listings a month. Fines for operating without a licence can reach 600,000 euros. Budget travellers who planned on an apartment are working against a shrinking, enforced pool, not a loophole.
Tickets moved too
Park Guell is 18 euros, up 80 percent from 10. Sagrada Familia is 26 euros, 36 with towers, plus a June-December centenary surcharge. Transit is the cheap line: a T-Casual 10-ride card is 13 euros in one zone.
