The compact French Quarter and Garden District, the St. Charles Avenue streetcar line running since 1835, and year round festivals from Mardi Gras to Jazz Fest give visitors an unusually high density of things to do within a small, walkable footprint.
What nearly ruined the trip
The honest friction points are real rather than exaggerated. Bourbon Street security is still a work in progress a year after the January 2025 truck attack, with temporary bollards and barriers standing in for the permanent plan officials have not yet funded, and French Quarter pickpocketing remains active enough that police issued a public warning during Carnival season 2026. Summer heat index values regularly hit the low 100s Fahrenheit, hurricane season stretches from June through November and can disrupt travel with little warning, and the post Katrina levee system, while it has held through major storms since 2012, is documented as sinking and underfunded for the maintenance it needs.
