Sixteen Dollars for Shrimp Stew, Fifteen for Fried Alligator
Review of Cochon
Been to New Orleans? This page needs you more than it needs us.
A first-hand review outranks desk research every time, and yours will sit above this one.
Share your experienceCochon charges $16 for shrimp stew with tasso, wilted greens and pecan rice calas, and $15 for fried alligator with chili garlic mayonnaise. Wood-fired oysters are on the same list. The restaurant is Cajun rather than Creole, which is the distinction most visitors never get straight: this is country southern Louisiana cooking, built on the whole pig, smoke and fire, rather than the French-inflected city food of the Quarter. It is in the Warehouse District, a few minutes from the WWII Museum, and the room is plain brick and wood with an open kitchen. Nothing about it is decorative.
What was great
Genuine Cajun cooking rather than the Creole the Quarter serves. A wood-fired oven that gets used properly. Small plates that let you order across the menu without committing to one heavy entree.
What nearly ruined the trip
It is loud, and the hard surfaces make it louder. Booking is needed and the popular slots go early. Prices have climbed with the neighbourhood.
