Prague in 2026: Castle Views, Cheap Beer and a City Cracking Down on Overtourism

St Vitus Cathedral and the Astronomical Clock anchor the main sightseeing route, while neighborhoods like Vinohrady and Zizkov offer quieter, residential alternatives with their own restaurant and pub scenes away from the main tourist flow. The city is in the middle of a genuine crackdown on the effects of overtourism. As of January 1, 2026, shared e scooter rentals are banned citywide, organized bar crawls are prohibited between 10pm and 6am, and Prague 1 has designated no drinking zones covering Old Town Square, the Charles Bridge area and Wenceslas Square, where an open container can draw a fine. Prague's municipal tourist tax currently sits at CZK 50 per person per night, but Prague 1's district council has proposed raising it to roughly CZK 175, about EUR 7, to bring it closer to the EU average. A national review board is expected to rule by mid 2026, with any new rate taking effect in 2027. Getting around got more expensive at the start of 2026. A 30 minute PID transit ticket now costs 39 CZK on paper, or 36 CZK in the PID Litacka app, and a 90 minute ticket costs 50 CZK on paper, or 46 CZK in app, both covering metro, tram, bus and the Petrin funicular with a single validation. The Airport Express bus from Vaclav Havel Airport to Prague's main train station also doubled in price in January 2026, from 100 to 200 CZK for the roughly 35 minute ride. A day trip to Kutna Hora, about one hour away by train, remains one of the best side trips from Prague, combining the Gothic St Barbara's Cathedral with the Sedlec Ossuary, a chapel decorated with the bones of an estimated 40,000 to 70,000 people. Visitors from the United States, United Kingdom, Canada and dozens of other visa exempt countries can currently stay up to 90 days within any 180 day period without a visa. The EU's ETIAS pre travel authorization system is expected to start applying to this group in late 2026.
What was great
Prague's core appeal is architectural density paired with an unusually good and still affordable food and beer scene. Czech pilsner style lager, hearty pub fare and a real neighborhood life in areas like Vinohrady and Zizkov reward visitors who venture beyond Old Town. The castle complex, Charles Bridge and the Vltava riverfront deliver on the postcard version of the city, and Kutna Hora offers one of the more unusual and worthwhile day trips in Central Europe.
What nearly ruined the trip
The honest friction is overcrowding and rising cost. Old Town Square, Charles Bridge and the routes between them are jammed with tour groups for much of the year, and the same few blocks host currency exchange counters running bait and switch rates plus restaurants that pad bills with unlisted service charges, uninvited bread baskets and tip screens defaulting to 20 percent. Transit fares and the airport bus both got meaningfully more expensive in January 2026, and the city's own fight over its tourist tax signals further increases are coming for 2027.
