Share your experienceDesign Museum Denmark charges DKK 140 for adults, DKK 90 for under-27s and students with valid ID, and admits children under 18 free. It opens daily from 10.00 to 18.00, with late opening until 20.00 on Thursdays. The museum is the answer to a question most visitors to Copenhagen arrive already asking: why does everything here look like that. The Danish Chair gallery alone lines up the twentieth century's most copied furniture in one long room, and seeing the originals in sequence makes the copies in every airport lounge on earth suddenly legible. It is housed in an eighteenth-century former hospital in Frederiksstaden, a few minutes from Amalienborg, which gives the collection a set of calm rooms and a courtyard garden that most design museums would envy.
What was great
The Danish Chair gallery, which is the clearest single exhibit about modern design anywhere. Free for under-18s. The building and its garden are worth the visit on their own, and the late Thursday opening is genuinely useful.
What nearly ruined the trip
A hundred and forty kroner is steep for a museum you can see in ninety minutes, and Copenhagen is expensive enough already. The collection is narrow by design, so if you are not interested in objects you will be finished quickly.
